The 20 Yugumo class destroyers were built as improved Kagero's and, as first class destroyers, could always be found in the thick of the action. Four Yugumo class destroyers escorted the carriers at Midway, and nine were guarding Admiral Kurita's Centre Force at Leyte.

The Hasegawa kit is fairly accurate in shape, but lacks fine detail. The newer kits include an excellent generic set of parts to replace the turrets and torpedo tubes as well as some of the other detail parts. This has gone a long way to resurrect this aging kit. The new parts also include great little models of the Nakajima A6M2-N 'Rufe' and the Kawanishi N1K Kyofu 'Rex'.

Pitroad skywave make the Yugumo (W26) and the Asashimo (W27). W26 includes parts to construct all of the early war Yugumo's and W27 is designed for the late war Yugumo's with radar and improved AA. Where the Pitroad kits score highly is in the details moulded into all of the fittings leaving much fewer blank areas on the superstructure of these ships.
