Spec Sheet on the Takao class

Model of the Atago

Beat up box art for the old Atago

A Brief History: Part of the Takao class of heavy cruisers all four served with distinction until their... well... extinction. Modernized more then the Chokai during her career she also retained all 5 twin 8" mounts. She along with most of her class was sunk, or heavily damaged, by torpedoes from the American submarines Dace and Darter while en route to the IJNs last large scale showing in the Pacific War. Only the Chokai survived the torpedo attack that day unscathed and she was sunk two days later.

This model is quite dated, but not bad considering. I'm not sure of the models accuracy in layout, but expect some modification would have to be made in light of research on this class since this models release.

Overall this model gets a 7 out of 10. There is alot of flash on the smaller parts, and the deck could use more detail, and there is no detail on the 8" mount barbettes, but the main pieces are cleanly defined when compared to a Hasegawa of this same time period. I have the BCV Ise from Hasegawa (old mold) and the smaller caliber weapons on the Mini Craft model are far better.

Look back from time to time for when I actually build her.
